First Day!

What a FANTASTIC first day we had! It was so great meeting everyone and I see a great year in our future! This week we will be doing a lot of "get to know each other" activities and some writing activities that focus on each students unique characteristics.

Here are a few things to ease you into a brand new year!

1) Arrival at School: Every morning our grade 2's will wait on the grade 2 playground for the entry bell. There will be a supervisor outside at 7:45 (It's me on Thursdays!) who will help escort them in when the time comes.

2) Indoor Shoes: Super important! Please make sure your child has some runners for PE as we can not allow flip flops or high heels on the gym floor.

3) Spelling tests! We will begin spelling tests on Monday. Their list of words will go out on Monday and a pre-test will happen on Wednesday. If they get 10/10 on their pre-test they are not required to write the final again on Friday. On Mondays we also do a worksheet that reviews the words, if it isn't completed during class time it will go home for homework but is not due back until the Friday of the test.

4) Reading Journals: In grade 2 our students will have nightly reading homework. They will be using their plastic duo-tangs with sheets provided from school. They are required to read at least 10-15 minutes (they can read anything they want!) and to record it in their reading journal (this won't start until Monday.) After they have read they are to write the title of the book and 1-2 sentences about; something they liked about it, didn't like about it, facts etc... There are 5 sections per page (front and back) one for each day of the week. On Monday we will check the first one, Tuesday the second etc, etc.

5) Show and Share: There will be a monthly newsletter that goes home at the beginning of each month. Septembers will be going home next week. On the back of this newsletter is the student's show and share schedule. Every student will have a chance to do a show and tell once a month.

6) Water Bottles: I strongly encourage water bottles in the classroom. Water is so important and to have it readily available on the students desks is fantastic. It also eliminates interrupting class time to go and get a drink from the fountain.

I hope this answers some questions and a few things in our class. If you have any questions please feel free to e-mail me at anytime at either holly.sutherland@nlsd.ab.ca or at hsutherland@artsmithaviationacademy.ca .

I'm sure we will have an amazing year, I strongly encourage you to check back on the blog regularly as I'll be updated frequently. You can also find spelling words under the LA section starting on Monday!

Get a good nights rest and I'll see you all in the morning :) !
